SS Athen sank after collision with British steamer SS Thor off Portland Bill when on passage from Cardiff for Antwerp with patent fuel on the 18th March 1906.

From – Nick Chipchase

“Athen is upright and complete although much of the decking has collapsed inward. Her triple expansion engine is visible. The coal block cargo is scattered about. These bear the words “Patent Cardiff ” and a crown. HAPAG crockery has been recovered from the wreck as has her stern dolphin binnacle and builders plate. Also one or two brass letters of her name have been found in the bow area. Maximum depth is 57m and the shallowest part is 51m. “
